Harris Brogan's Story Following a recent article in one of the major Scottish Sunday tabloids which painted the incorrect picture of Harris’s eczema, my wife and I felt that it was important to provide the correct information of our sons condition. Harris was born on 3rd Sept 2002 and showed classic signs of atopic eczema at about 3 months old, initially his cheeks and the slowly developing over his body. The medical personnel that we had dealings with ranging from our local GP to dermatologists in Edinburgh have all been caring and very professional towards Harris at all times. They employed various techniques to attempt to control Harris’ eczema, some did make an improvement while others were ineffective, however it is very important to remember that what improves one child may not be as effective with another. At this point a family friend wrote with Harris’ input a letter to GMTV regarding his dream of “all I want for Christmas …………” The letter was successful and we appeared on GMTV on 12th December 2007. For Harris a day to remember the TV footage gave the exact impression that we required. The response was amazing, ranging from old wives tales to well wishes leading on to companies offering their products or services. In addition, Fiona Phillips, Andrew Castle, Penny Smith, Dr Hilary Jones and “King of the Jungle” Chris Biggins were very hospitable and helpful. Prior to GMTV family life was tiring and a constant battle. Harris has a younger brother Marcus 4 and sister Ruathy 3 who to a certain extent were neglected by the amount of time that Harris required. Family outings were impossible due to the heat in restaurants or indoor kid play areas this was due to the fact that Harris was constantly grumpy due to the lack of sleep and also our feeling that it must be off putting for kids and parents to have a wee boy constantly itching and scratching next to you! Swimming was a no go and he couldn’t sleep over at friends houses because of his allergies. His sleep pattern was very irregular and basically he was waking up with a hangover each morning which meant that his school work was becoming affected in that he couldn’t really concentrate.
