Infant Eczema

Infant Eczema is an irritation on the top layer of skin making it dry, red or pimply and extremely itchy.

The best way to manage (there is no cure) infant eczema is to keep skin moisturised with a rich non perfumed moisturising cream like Pure Baby.

What is infant eczema?

Infant eczema or contact dermatitis is a condition of dry, sensitive skin. Something (a list detailed below) irritates your child's skin making it itchy, red, pimply, dry and or flaky which inflames the epidermis (the outer layer of skin), which when scratched the skin becomes more inflamed, the outer layer of skin gets scratched away leaving the affected area even more sensitive, red, itchy and sore and will continue to worsen unless the cycle is broken.

What the doctors say about infant eczema?

Avoid scratching, investigate possible causes of infant eczema and moisturise, moisturise, moisturise. If skin is broken a mild steroid cream is advised, a tiny amount should be used until skin heals over then keep moisturising..

What else can I do?

Keep your child's finger nails short to limit scratching which can lead to infection.
Always apply emollients in a downwards direction to avoid cream getting trapped underneath hair follicles which can block pores and lead to infection.

Investigate possible causes of infant eczema, the list is exhaustive but can include dust, house dust mites, pet hair or fluff, pollen, perfumes or dyes in shampoo and soaps, strong aftershaves, perfumes or air fresheners.

Seasonal changes when air changes, winter into spring as temperatures rise or summer to autumn when central heating dries the air by evaporating moisture.

Fabric softeners should be avoided and use only non-bio washing powder.

Diet should be considered as some foods can trigger infant eczema with milk, cheese, cream, nuts, tomatoes, cucumber, melon and strawberries as examples.
